Neurosurgery

The Department of Neurosurgery, one of the first in Lebanon and the Middle East, was established in the 1960s by late Prof. Gideon Mohasseb. It offers a complete treatment of cranial and spinal neurosurgical pathologies, relying on specialized human skills and a highly efficient technical platform.

The Department offers academic training to medical students and residents specializing in neurosurgery, and conducts scientific activity in basic and clinical research published in international medical journals.

The services provided by the Department, which consists of 6 neurosurgeons, cover adult and pediatric neurosurgery in the following areas (non-exhaustive list):

  1. Cranial surgery

- Adult and pediatric brain tumor surgery

- Awake surgery, neuronavigation, intraoperative monitoring, ultrasound and stereotaxis

- Hydrocephalus with access to endoscopic treatment

- Epilepsy surgery

- Surgery of intracranial aneurysm and arteriovenous malformations

- Surgery of skull base tumors

- Endoscopic surgery of pituitary adenomas

      2.    Spinal surgery

           - Surgery of herniated discs performed by microsurgery

           - Surgery of lumbar or cervical stenosis

           - Surgery of medullary tumors with MEP monitoring

           - Surgery of spinal trauma

  1. Functional surgery (pain and spasticity surgery and peripheral nerve surgery)

  • Thermocoagulation or balloon compression for trigeminal neuralgia
  • Implantation of a spinal cord neurostimulator
  • Morphine or Lioresal pump
